Graduated from Institut Kesenian Jakarta in 2001 majoring in Visual Communication Design. Always has a great passion for art and design. Drawing and photography are some of his hobbies. Fell in love with graphic design and art directing as soon as he was introduced with the wide world of Visual Communication in college. Determined to expand his knowledge and skills, he plunged into animation, multimedia and video production, besides print design. Worked as an art director in several companies in communication and design industry mostly on his own creative studio or as a freelancer. He has a list of creative projects from various clients, ranging from company profile, TVC or PSA, video presentation, music video, website etc. In the past few years he is focus in Animation Industry for TV series and Feature film development. As an daydreamer, he has a mission to provide entertainment with positive message for kids.

Works

Binekon

Five cute creatures representing five big islands in Indonesia, i.e. Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Papua, in the race. The race make them learn how to care one to another.

Swipe Birds

Swipe Bird represents variety of extinct Indonesian birds in cute and unique character design. Swipe to help cute birds go higher safely, avoid trees and naughty spiders. Collect coins to unlock other themes and birds.

1. What was your major when you are in college?

I took Visual Communication in IKJ (institut Kesenian Jakarta)

 

2. What made you choose arts and design?

I fell in love with graphic design as I was introduced with the wide world of Visual Communication in college

 

3. Can you share your personal journey?

I was Graduated from Institut Kesenian Jakarta in 2001 majoring in Visual Communication Design. Determined to expand my knowledge and skills, I plunged into animation, multimedia and video production, besides print design.  Worked as an art director in several companies in communication and design industry mostly on my own creative studio named Belantara Studio. It is located in Bali. I also work as a freelancer. In the past few years I am just focus in Animation Industry for TV series and Feature film development.

 

4. How was your experience in managing animation process? Is it hard?

It was not that hard. The most important thing is loving it first. For the technical problems, you can learn more. The most important thing in animation is the storyline. If you made a good animation movie, but the story is not that good, it will reduce its value, and vice versa. The power of stories can covers the lack of good technical, but the technical stuff is not necessarily covers the bad stories.

 

5. What is your style as a designer?

I focus more on “Concept”. From designing characters until making the script (story making). My style is more into “Cartoon”.

 

6. I’ve seen your work, the one the short movie named “Binekon” and it is very unique. Why did you make Binekon?

We made Binekon with the aim to give impressions for children, because there is lack of educated movies for children.

 

7. What Binekon exactly is?

“Binekon” stands for Bhinneka icons. Bhinneka means “diversity”. These five cute imaginary characters represent the rich Indonesian culture, i.e. Jabo from Java, Sumi from Sumatra, Kale from Kalimantan, Sula from Sulawesi and Papu from Papua, and moral values within the big five Indonesian islands. Their existence is dedicated to all the kids in the world.

 

8. I saw the 5 cute characters inside every series of Binekon movies. Can you share a bit about them

The 5 characters named Jabo, Sumi, Kale, Papu, and Sula.

jabo is a customary garments called “Blankon” and “Surjan Lurik” from Java (Indonesia). He appears to be befuddled over everything, but he is really insightful. He lives in a house that is also his vehicle called “Rumah Joglo”.

Sumi is a “Pempek”. She is a popular nourishment from Palembang. She is delicate and loves to share. She lives in a house that is additionally her vehicle called “Rumah Gadang” from sumatera.

Kale is a war shield from Kalimantan. He is very brave but can be quite clumsy. He lives in a house called “Rumah Betang”. His house is also used as his transportation.

Sula is tarsius from Sulawesi. She is genuine and entirely cheerful. She lives in a house called “Rumah Tongkonan” from Sulawesi. She use it as her vehicle.

The last is Papu. He is a sculpture from Papua. He is extremely dynamic and entirely inquisitive. His house called “Rumah Honai” from Papua. He also use it as his transportation, same as his friends.

 

9. How can you find your daily inspiration?

Inspiration came from everywhere. Sometimes, we are not concern to the things around us, whereas it could be our inspirations. For example, you have a neighbour who is rarely go out from home. Now, you can imagine what was the reason behind it? Is he a spy? Or just because he is a shy person? From that, you could make a fiction story. Anyway, I wrote an article about it in my website. 10. What is your best advice for students like me who will enter the professional Creative World?

Never be afraid to explore new things. Notice anything around you, so that could be as part as your new things to be learned and inspirations. Focus on your goal, because that could be the asset for your future.

1. What was your major when you are in college?

Majoring in Visual Communication Design, Art of Design Faculty in ISI Yogyakarta

 

2. What made you choose Arts and Design?

I am interested in Art. Since in primary school, I always win in drawing and painting competition. I was actually interested to be a doctor, but I failed 3 times for UMPTN

 

3. When did you start loving and deciding that this is your passion?

Started from college

 

4. Can you share your personal career journey? When did you start your first job? What was your first job? And how was it feel?

First, I worked in screen printing in a department store. Second, I worked in Wisno Prakaka as a graphic designer. Third, I worked in Trisakti as a lecturer. Then, I move to Wilolo Corporindo as an Art Director. Then, I worked in Geget Gigit Studio as an Art Director

 

6. What do you think about the role of Graphic Design in this world?

No role. More shifting aesthetic now. The basic is creative and communication

 

7. What do you think about the role of Graphic Design in Indonesia? Do you see any positive or negative progression?

Yes. Indonesia is very creative, but only following trends not creating the trend graphic

 

8. How can you find your true passion?

Always browsing and watching the detail. For example, when you watch a movie, you usually only notice the beginning and the main player, right? But you did not notice the background, whreas the true passion came from the background

 

9. How do you find your daily inspirations?

Following the design ideas or trends, and reading magazines

 

10. Can you share a bit about managing process when you first deal with clients? Any advice that I must remember?

You need to think of your main goal. It will help you to make the managing process easier. The second advice is meet the budget. If you have lack of budget, the managing process could not be as smooth as you thought

 

11. What are you specialised in? Is it more into photography? Or digital?

Both

 

12. How many projects have to been handled? Types of projects?

A lot. Exhibition Contractor, Photography, Branding Consultant and Corporate Identity, and Graphic Design (print)

 

13. What is your best advice for students like me who will enter the professional Creative World ?

Always ready for everything that come up next. Prepare  everything that could help you in the future. The main asset that you need for your future is “Knowledges”. So, gain as much knowledges and experiences as you can. The qualities required for graphic design are IQ, EQ, and SQ.

IQ in Graphic includes Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, CD. IQ in Multimedia includes 3D. Last is IQ in Internet includes Programming.

EQ is passion determined.
